For the first time in my life, I am living alone in an apartment. I am the fourth of five children so there were always people around when I grew up. When I went off to university I had a roommate in residence for the first year and then I lived in a house with 6 people for the subsequent years. After I graduated, I moved to Toronto with Chuck and have lived with him and our family ever since. It is a different experience to be on my own with no responsibilities about work, family or dogs to walk. I am getting used to it but I don't feel far away thanks to Skype!
I moved into the Silvertown Metropolitan apartments on Sunday with help from Bandol. She took me to a supermarket where foreigners like to shop and I was able to get all the supplies that I will need for the next while. She also took me to my favourite fruit shop that has a good selection of fresh fruit as well as a nice wine selection. In addition to nice fresh mangoes, Royal Gala apples, oranges, lemons and miniature bananas, I found a bottle of Two Oceans Sauvignon Blanc and Lindt chocolate! I'm really happy now!! :-)
There is a beautiful infinity pool on the 13th floor of my building along with a gym. I forgot my bathing suits in Toronto so I went looking for one. There is a fabulous new mall in Phnom Penh, the AEON Mall, where Emily & Adam worked this past summer. It is a large 3 story mall that is comparable in size to the Scarborough Town Centre in Toronto or Bayshore Mall in Ottawa. Emily & Adam were here for the opening in June and helped with the marketing of the new World Food Court. I had lunch there one day and the food was good but it wasn't very busy at the time. This is a very different experience for most Cambodians who are used to picking up their food at the market and preparing it at home or buying a meal from a street vendor. The Mall is also very different from the markets where they usually shop. Anyway, I looked through this whole mall and could not find any bathing suits for sale. Bandol explained that this is because Cambodians do not go swimming. She managed to find a store that did sell some so I was able to get a bathing suit and surprisingly, it fit! The style is a little different from anything I would usually wear but it will do the trick.
